Y Stakes

If you're an experienced gardener you are likely aware of the tools and accessories needed to help keep your garden growing properly. Some of the most common needs when gardening are y stakes. y stakes are yard stakes that help to keep plants growing upright. Traditional y stakes are created in a y shape with two sides. The metal stakes have two loops, one on either side. The stakes help to keep plants growing properly. The plants will grow through the holes and around the stake and will use the stake as support. y stakes are often used with vegetable plants, particularly tomatoes, beans and any other type of plants that grow upright. Stakes add strength and security to the plants as they grow. The stems of some plants can bend easily, most often when filled with heavy fruit. When using y stakes be sure to choose sturdy ones that can be easily inserted into the ground. They can typically be inserted several inches to about 6 inches into the earth. Once in the ground they will provide a sturdy place for plants to lean as they grow.

Another use for y stakes is to help keep plants from growing into one another. Plants that have feelers can intertwine easily and this can cause problems with growing. As the plants grow they can be coaxed through a particular hole on the stake to keep it growing separately from other plants. y stakes can also be used for a single plant. A plant, such as a tomato plant, will grow tall before it bears fruit. Once the fruit begins to develop the weight of it will often pull the stem down to the ground. This can break the stem completely.

If the stem doesn't break the fruit can be sitting on the ground. As a result the fruit will rot and will be no good. To save the plant and the fruit you'll need a veggie cage or some y stakes to keep it standing upright. When using y stakes or veggie cages you'll need to put them in before the plants are mature. As the plants begin to grow install the y stakes by pushing them into the ground next to the plant. The plant will grow through the stake and use it to keep it standing tall. Some plants will need to be tied gently to the stakes using garden twine. y stakes will also help keep bugs from attacking the plants from the ground. The bugs are attracted to fruit and if it sits on the ground it will attract more pests. Garden stakes are also useful for protecting plants in areas where people may pass by. It's a good idea to keep some y stakes on hand for all your gardening needs. They can be reused again and again. At the end of the gardening season simply remove the stakes from the ground and wash them with a garden hose. Once dry simply store them until the next year.
