Vegetable gardens are gaining in popularity. People all around the world are becoming more aware of ecology and the benefits of growing their own food. Growing food in vegetable gardens is easy when you know the basics. There are just a few items you'll need to assist in the garden including Yard stakes.Planning your garden is one of the most important aspects of vegetable gardening. Determine plant placement based on the size of the plants, how much room they need and their direction of growth. For example some plants like pumpkins or squash grow along the ground. You'll need plenty of room for these vegetables to spread out. Some vegetables and plants grow upwards. As they grow larger and begin to produce vegetables the plants need some additional support. Yard stakes are the best option to use on plants. Yard stakes support the plants helping to keep them upright.

If plants are left to hang down without the support of Yard stakes several things can happen. First, the weight of the fruit as it matures can bend and break the stems. Second the fruit can touch the ground. When it does it will begin to rot. Finally, if the fruit hangs to the ground insects and animals can more easily get to it ruining it.Yard stakes can effectively support your plants without the need to constantly check on them. Stakes should be sturdy yet should hold the plant gently. When plants are tied too tightly to stakes the stems can be damaged and the plant could be killed. Look for stakes that are strong enough to withstand wind, weather and animals yet gentle enough to support the plant properly.Yard stakes can be used with a wide variety of plants including vegetables and flowers. Any plant that requires some support should be staked. Without a stake the plant will likely not survive since it will fall and the stem will break.Sturdy Yard stakes are often made of metal that is galvanized to ensure that they won't rust when exposed to the elements. Stakes should be able to be pushed into the ground to a depth of several inches to secure it.

The best time to put the Yard stakes into the ground is when the plants are still very small. In the case of plants that have been transplanted such as tomatoes be sure to allow some time for the plants to become accustomed to their new environment. Then simply place the stakes into the ground so that the plant is centered in the middle. As plants grow larger you'll need to assist them in using the Yard stakes. Some plants, such as tomatoes, have small feelers that will help it attach to the stakes. When the plants are tall enough to reach the first rung of the stake make sure that it securely attaches to the stake. If not, gently help the plant attach. Some plants will require that you hold them to the stake using string. Use special twine that is made specifically for this purpose to avoid harming the plant. Tie the plant loosely to make sure it is healthy. To find out more about Yard stakes and garden equipment visit www.VeggieCage.com.
