FAQs for Using Veggie Cage Plant Supports
Q: How long will the Veggie Cage tomato cage last? Can I use it for more than one season?
A: You can expect your Veggie Cage to last several seasons, probably 4 or even 5. There is nothing on the Veggie Cage to rust or rot, like typical wire tomato cages. You’ll get the maximum number of growing seasons by taking your Veggie Cages and Tomato Rings in for the winter.
Q: What is it made from?
A: The Veggie Cage is molded from lasting, durable homopolypropylene, a very dense material, designed to withstand weathering from the onslaught of sun, wind and rain.
Weight, Uses, Plant Concerns & More
Q: Is any assembly required before I can use it?
A: No. The Veggie Cage comes all in one piece. You need only to snap off the threaded thumb screw and screw it into the clamp in order to hold the Veggie Cage to your tomato stake. No other assembly is required.
Q: What kind of tomato stake will I need for this?
A: Any kind of tomato stake will work with the Veggie cage tomato cage: round, square, wooden, or even metal rebar rods, which some people like to use. The clamp dimensions are 1-3/4" X 1-3/8". Any stake that will fit within that space is perfect for the Veggie Cage.
Q: How big around is the Veggie Cage?
A: The Veggie Cage measures approximately 4" at the top and gets progressively wider down to its 13" bottom. If this sounds surprisingly narrow, remember the Veggie Cage is designed to encase the main stems and support the branches for height.
Q: How much does it weigh?
A: About 3/4 lb.
Q: How tall will the Veggie Cage reach?
A: The Veggie Cage is designed to stretch up to 7 feet, so that even the taller varieties of tomato plants will be easily contained. However, it can also be used at a lower height, depending on the height of the plant you'll be using it for. For instance, you may want to use all 7 feet for many tomatoes, or only 4 or 5 feet for snow peas.
Q: How do I store the Veggie Cage? Do I have to "rewind" the spiral somehow?
A: No! The Veggie Cage is designed to have "shape memory", and will go back to its original shape very easily. Simply collapse the Veggie Cage tomato cage, then flip it upside down. A small weight, like a garden pot or saucer, to hold it flat for maybe 5 minutes will help the Veggie Cage relax into its original shape. Your Veggie Cage can be stored flat or hung on a wall of your garage or garden shed.
Q: What other plants can I grow using the Veggie Cage plant support?
A: There are so many! For instance, if you ever try growing a bed of snow peas supported by the Veggie Cage, you'll never want to grow them any other way! It makes the snow peas so easy to pick, and you can grow so many in such a small space. You'll also love the Veggie Cage for climbing beans, cucumbers, clematis, dahlias -- any kind of plant with bushy foliage and a need for support is perfect for the Veggie Cage, since the leaves literally hide the spirals.
Q: Won't the weight of the tomatoes or the whole plant stretch out those coils?
A: The Veggie Cage may look quite flexible, but its artful design allows for even distribution of the plant's weight. However, it's very important that you follow the directions for helping your plant grow properly within the coils. It doesn't take much, just a second or two a once or twice a week, to make sure that the stems continue to grow within the coils.
